Tom the Outback Mailman

By Kristin Weidenbach

  • Paperback
  • £7.99

For twenty years Tom Kruse was the mailman on the Birdsville Track, battling the heat, floods and mechanical breakdowns in his trusty truck.

Tom Kruse was a real Australian hero. He delivered the mail to outback stations and towns all along the Birdsville Track. It was a tough job, but Tom was even tougher, making sure that the mail got through no matter what.

Based on her bestselling book, MAILMAN OF THE BIRDSVILLE TRACK, Kristin Weidenbach has written a lively, engaging version for younger readers, capturing the humour, excitement and ingenuity of a classic slice of Australia's fast-vanishing history. Timothy Ide is a South Australian illustrator with a genuine feel for the beauty and hardship of life in the Australian outback.

The Winner of the 2013 CBCA Book of the Year, Eve Pownall Category, TOM THE OUTBACK MAILMAN is now part of LOTHIAN AUSTRALIAN FAVOURITES, a collection of the very best Australian picture books.

What is Evolution?

Louise Spilsbury, Mike Gordon
Contributors:
Louise Spilsbury, Mike Gordon

Looking at both the history of life on Earth and the scientific breakthroughs that led to our greater understanding of the living world, this book gives the definitive overview of the theory of evolution. It takes an in-depth look at the work of Charles Darwin, Thomas Huxley and Alfred Russel Wallace as well as topics such as genetic modification, artificial selection and bacterial resistance. Starting with fossils and early life forms, the book investigates the development and diversification of life on Earth over billions of years. Topics such as adaptation and specification, as well as convergent evolution, symbiosis and genetics help illustrate how evolution affects all living beings and has lead to the huge biodiversity we have on our planet today. Mike Gordon's illustrations lend a light touch and add a dash of humour.- Features biographies of key people, such as Charles Darwin, Alfred Russel Wallace, Thomas Huxley, James Watson and Francis Crick.- Matches the New Curriculum programmes of study for evolution, inheritance and genetics at KS2 and KS3.
